We were delighted to be awarded the Adviser Firm of the Year award on Thursday 11th February at the Professional Adviser Awards 2016 in London. Our Managing Director, Margaret Mearns, was there to collect the award.
Margaret said: “We are absolutely delighted to win the Professional Adviser award. This is a wonderful recognition of the hard work and professionalism shown by all of our team.”
The Professional Adviser Awards “seek to reward excellence in financial advice” and the entrants are judged by experienced financial professionals. The panel is made up of platform experts, fund and wealth managers, financial advisers, and business consultants.
In this, the 11th year of the competition, there were seven other companies in the Scotland and Northern Ireland category; including two fellow Edinburgh firms who were highly commended. There is stiff competition for this category every year and we were very honoured to have been recognised for this prominent award.
We have been accredited as having met the Platinum Investors in People (IIP) standard for people practices. To be independently recognised by IIP is a great achievement, and something that we have worked hard to achieve.
Our company ethos is to do the right thing both for our clients, and for our people, and to have been accredited as having sound people practices is something to be celebrated. The level of service that we provide to our clients is directly related to the development and calibre of our team. We are proud to support the learning, development and career progression of those working with us.
We will continue to work with Investors in People to ensure that we not only uphold the standard, but also exceed it over the longer term.
In February 2015 we successfully achieved Investors in Young People accreditation, the only people management standard that focuses on the employer’s recruitment and retention of young people. This represents a true commitment to the training and development of our staff. Following the launch of the IIYP 2nd Generation framework on 23rd July, we are pleased to announce that we have achieved the silver standard award.
Launched in July 2014, Investors in Young People originated through a key recommendation from the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, led by Sir Ian Wood. The accreditation is offered to all businesses across Scotland and exists to recognise and support organisations across Scotland in the employment of young people.
Catherine Bell, Operations Director of Mearns & Company, attended the IIYP 2nd Generation framework launch at Atlantic Quay, Glasgow on 23rd July. On collecting the award, Catherine said: "We are delighted to have achieved the IIYP silver accreditation, and to have external recognition that we are doing the right thing for our young people. Our next goal is to improve further, and achieve gold in the 2nd Generation IIYP framework."
In January 2008, we were awarded the prestigious Chartered Financial Planners designation by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) making us the sixth firm in Scotland to achieve this designation.
When you use a Chartered firm you are dealing with proven professionals. The CII is empowered by the Privy Council to award Chartered status, and the award is only made in deserving cases. Although Chartered titles are steeped in history, they remain the benchmark of professional excellence and integrity.
Only the UK’s premier financial planning firms qualify for Chartered status. If you wish to know more about how using a Chartered firm can ensure you get the best possible advice, service and support, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our business was the first Scottish advisory firm to be shortlisted for the Small Firm of the Year in the Corporate Adviser Awards 2012. We made the shortlist again in 2013, 2014 and 2016, and we were highly commended in 2017. These awards recognise the UK’s top employee benefit advisers and providers.

The Fund Manager of the Year Awards, run by Investment Week magazine, celebrates the achievements of the UK’s most talented fund managers and investment houses.
The event primarily focuses on fund managers. However, those who are up for an award are also asked to put forward advisers who they feel have an excellent investment process, and are worthy of winning their own award.
We were shortlisted within the Advisory Firm of the Year 2013 category, one of only six advisory firms in the UK to make the shortlist, and the only Scottish firm to do so.
Only the real Living Wage is independently calculated each year based on what employees and their families need to live. It is an hourly rate that provides a benchmark for employers that voluntarily choose to ensure their staff earn a wage that meets their cost of living.
On becoming accredited, employers are awarded the Living Wage Employer Mark, a symbol of responsible pay. This mark is a badge of honour.
By displaying the Living Wage Employer Mark, employers can signal to others their commitment to paying a wage that is enough to live on.
Paying the Living Wage is good for business, good for the individual and good for society.
