Meet Aurelija Buckute

Aurelija Buckute, Chartered Financial Planner at Mearns & Company, answers some questions about her career to date and life in general.
What was your route to Mearns & Company?
I applied to various jobs in the finance industry following my graduation from university. Mearns & Company was one of multiple job opportunities I applied for. I was offered the position shortly after my interview, which I accepted without really understanding what I was getting in to. I now think that I was very lucky!
What do you think is the best perk about working for Mearns & Company?
The sense that my work makes a difference to the lives of other people – our clients. This is where the sense of purpose comes from and it makes the hours at work fly by.
What was your first job?
I worked in the housekeeping department in one of the international hotels in Glasgow throughout university. Although this doesn’t sound exciting, and it wasn’t, I at least had normal working hours and got to stay two nights for free in London. It meant a lot back then.
What has been your best purchase or investment?
Flight tickets to see my family in Lithuania every year. The tickets cost a fortune during the Christmas period but spending time with my family cannot be valued by money.
What has been your worst purchase or investment?
A recent subscription to a guided meditation app. I hoped that paying money for the entire year in advance would help me get into the habit of meditating daily, but it didn’t. Maybe I’m already so mindful that I don’t really need this?
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Open my own library. I wouldn’t be limited to two bookshelves at home to fit all my books and could share books with many more people.
What was the last picture you took?
A picture of a re-potted fiddle-leaf fig – my first ever plant. I can now only hope that it will start giving me figs too!
