Neil Lindsay, Head of Paraplanning at Mearns & Company, answers some questions about his career to date and life in general.
What was your route to Mearns & Company?
I worked for several financial advice firms before joining Mearns & Company as a senior paraplanner in 2014. Mearns & Company are a class above my previous employers, with excellent client focus and highly qualified staff.
What do you think is the best perk about working for Mearns & Company?
Not so much a perk, but there is a great culture for encouraging personal development and progression. You don’t have to look far to see staff who have achieved tremendous exam success at a young age and been promoted through the ranks.
What was your first job?
I joined Standard Life as an administrator when I was 18. In the 1990s a lot of young people ‘fell into’ financial services, as Edinburgh is renowned in this area.
What has been your best purchase or investment?
I have been very lucky with house buying. I had a technique of slightly rounding up my offer, which meant that I twice won bidding wars by about £150 on a closing date.
What has been your worst purchase or investment?
I’m not a big spender on myself but have sometimes bought Christmas presents for my sons that have not been used.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Wearing my paraplanner hat, I would probably repay my mortgage and invest in my pension! Otherwise, I would holiday with more luxury than I’m accustomed to.
What was the last picture you took?
A picture of our garden shed, which we are looking for someone to demolish.
